The number of barre studios that have cropped up in DC is ridiculous. I don’t even know how you can possibly narrow down which one to go to aside from proximity.
A few weeks ago Kristen asked if I was interested in trying out Barre 3 in Georgetown. She had never been to a barre class and I haven’t found a studio here that works me out as good as Figure 4 in NYC. So why not?

Our first class with Jill was a little disappointing. It felt like we were just scratching the surface in barre moves. The ab blasts were great and while we were doing the thigh and seat work I felt a burn, but it quickly dissipated. Kristen also left feeling less than she thought she would.
We went back to a second class separately. Kristen liked her’s a lot more, as did I. The class I went to this week I felt it more in my legs than I did last time, seat a bit more, but it was lacking in abs department.
Interestingly, the girl next to me was using her Polar App and said that it often mocks her after barre class. Saying “nice warm-up for the real workout.” I haven’t done my Physique 57 DVDs in a few weeks and I think I might have to compare. I don’t remember feeling like I could go for a run after the 57 min workout, same for Figure 4.
The space itself is pretty beautiful. I love the exposed beams. I don’t adore the floor, it is a bit hard and I’d prefer some of that squishy material, but it works.
I have one more class left in my package, and I am hoping I find the instructor that gives me everything.
I find that when I am on an exercise streak there are days that I am completely indecisive and that’s what stalls me. Today, was one of those days. Friday was my off day, so I woke up knowing that I was going to spend some quality time exercising. I just didn’t know what to do. Did I want to go for a run? Do a little yoga? Maybe rep out some barre exercises?
After broadcasting my problem on Twitter, I was convinced to do all three.
The hubby and I went for a nice 3M run around the neighborhood (or the neighborhood that I would like to one day live in, Lyon Park). I am not sure if it is because I took a lot of time off from running, or that I am currently doing shorter distances, but my pace has picked up. I’ve moved back into the 9:25/9:30 per mile, which is AWESOME. I really hope I can keep this up when I start training for the Cherry Blossom 10M.
When we got home I popped Sparkpeople’s Total Body Sculpting with Coach Nicole. This DVD has a cardio blast, barre workout, and weight exercise all under 25 minutes each. I did the barre workout today, which is just 20 minutes. It is definitely not as labor intensive as my Physique 57 DVDs or the live barre classes I’ve been to, but I still got a nice burn in my legs. There is very little arm focus and essentially no abs. It is good for a day like today when I am combining workouts, but I don’t think I would ever do it on its own.
After that, I convinced Josh to do some beginner yoga with me courtesy of Tara Stiles This is Yoga. I added in some advance variations where I wanted to, and liked ending this workout blast with a nice stretch. It was the first time I had done this flow and I thought for a practice touted as beginner she moved pretty fast. Once that was over, I practiced a few of my inversions…have headstand down, but really am having some issues with forearms and handstand (discussion for another time).
I am completely wiped now and am enjoying watching football on the couch. Arian Foster and JJ Watt are beasts!
This time of year completely messes with my workout will power. It is absolutely freezing in the morning making me want to stay in my nice comfy warm bed. Then there is the fact that by 4:00 p.m. the sun is setting and all I want to do is hibernate on my couch.
I don’t mind working out in the cold, it just requires a lot more diligence and planning. It shouldn’t come as much of a shocker that I am all about the defined work out plan and for a few months now I have been contemplating taking one of the Physique 57 challenges. So this month I am doing it. Eight days into it and I am actually sticking with it pretty well. I have had to switch a few days just based on timing (and traveling, running around with my ball and weights isn’t really easy), but mostly I am sticking to it.
Maybe next week I will try to get to an actual class and REALLY experience it rather than doing it with my DVD. The challenge is below.
